From Henima down to the Chulin and up to Inkyo, a really useful climb. It could hardly be steeper without being precipitous and the path was a mere mud slide. One of the Kuki coolies fell. Of course he was carrying the load with my crockery in it which must go lighter for the rest of the tour. The march was not a long one - 9 to 11 miles I suppose, but I did not get in till after 2 pm, partly because a silly ass who knew a better road took us out of the way into a blind jungle path, from which we had to retrace our steps losing an hour by it, but mainly because of the horrid steepness of the path up to the village. I don't wonder that no one has visited it for eight years. Even the dobashis shy at being sent there, and the very inhabitants don't live there. They live most of the year in their fields returning to the village for the two important gennas in the year, so that though they had assembled for my benefit the village had a deserted air and is usually inhabited by mithan only who have trampled the village street into an almost unpassable morass of mud. The unfortunate dobashi who had to carry backwards and forwards through it - for there was no way round or across - sank literally knee-deep as he went along, and that for about 80 yards. If he had fallen my lot would not have been enviable - nor his. The village has a strong position and keeps up its defences - or at any rate its ditch, gate and walls. The ditch was newly dug and beside the plank that served as a bridge for human beings was a single thread stretched across a bridge for souls. |
