text: To Lakema. Started in rain, but it cleared up and I was able to spend an hour by the road at Berrima unravelling an abstruse point of custom which the Gaonburas perversely refused to know anything about for fear their man should lose the case. There was also a cattle trespass dispute. It is the custom of Berrima that the owners of mithan build all fences, and that thereafter no claim for damage to crops lies against them. I have, however, warned them that if there are any more disputes I shall issue orders on the usual lines, making the owners of fields responsible for fences and the owners of mithan for damage to any but unfenced fields and shall compel owners to keep cow-herds.
