Halted Dimapur. Enquired into two small cases locally, disposed of dak. Pony and servants left for Nazira by the early morning train. Going to the Thana, I found that two of the 7 Constables were away chasing 7 dacoits and that two more were mounting guard over some treasure sent up from Calcutta without a guard, and by request of the Station Master. As I was not responsible for the treasure which must presumably be pice or at most nickel, I ordered these treasure guards also to join the Sub-Inspector in the pursuit of the dacoits - some up country men who have been committing robberies all down the line. My Sub Inspector here pursued them so closely that they had to throw away their food and all the silk and cloths they had got and some of the jewelry and even their shoes and coats but they got off into the jungle with most of the jewelry after a scrap with the 3 policemen who captured one of their lathis. This was at Rangapahar, and they have gone towards Langcholiet. Later one constable and some civilians came in by the up train with one of the dacoits captured after a struggle. Both were well knocked about. The other dacoits got away but one was so much hurt by a lathi that he could only crawl and the remaining constable is after him. Reinforcements go by the down train this evening. With luck we should get the whole seven. |
