Problems obtaining coolies at Hukpang |

We were to have started at 8.0 but the Namcho Khel failed to turn out any coolies and we were delayed till 9.15, only getting coolies there after catching HINGAN, the principal chief of HUKPANG (and the NAMCHO khel's glory) and keeping him in very vile durance till the coolies came. The whole affair was probably caused by our having refused HINGAN a fresh red cloth the night before, his former cloth having been confiscated 6 months ago only for instigating an uncalled for raid on KAMAHU. HINGAN was a disgusting old man of the most objectionable disposition and we kept him with us till we had passed through PHOMCHING. It must have been years since he had walked two miles and the unwonted exercise was probably most beneficial. The other headman SAMLUM was most helpful, however. After we had gone through PHOMCHING, two miles below HUKPANG on the same spur, we let Hingan go and went on to YANGPI, a long march for an escort with coolies, and we got in late. YANGPI, however, had cleared a camp for us in a suitable place, which saved a good deal of time. |
