Description of Churangchu, chief of Chisung who smuggled a rifle back from France |

Halted. Numbers of SANGTAM Gaonburas came in here from transfrontier villages. Among the chiefs who came in was CHURANGCHU of CHISUNG, an old friend of mine. This sportsman, who had got into trouble in 1913 for cutting up PAKAVI of KHUMISHE, enlisted as a labourer and went to France, not being able to go as a headman since he knew no Assamese. When he came back he managed to smuggle home a Mauser rifle and some ammunition in his bedding. Mr. Mills unfortunately heard of it and sent for it, which I thought very hard lines since CHURANGCHU had got it safely away across the frontier to his village. |
