Problems concerning mail and the telegraph at Mokokchung |
text: |
Halted Mokokchung. There is an innovation in the matter of posts and telegraphs which is quite unnecessary in a place of this sort. The working hours have been reduced to five, so that if the office is open from 9 to 11 and again from 12 to 3, which is the most convenient as the mail goes at 3.0 or thereabouts, letters coming in at night are not delivered till the next morning. A five hours working day is pretty ludicrous in any case. Even the miners have not demanded it yet, but in a place like Mokokchung where there is no work except when the mail comes in and goes out, it is absurd that the office should only be open for 5 hours. The Sub Post Master has absolutely nothing to do when he isn't on duty (and precious little when he is) except to sit in his house, and when one does want to send a telegram off after 3 pm, one has to pay late fees, though it is quite possibly the only telegram sent in the day. The present hours were fixed by the Superintendent of Post Offices in consultation with the Subdivisional Officer, but it is quite ridiculous that there should be a five hour working day at all in Mokokchung. |
