To Melomi. The path is very narrow in places and narrowest where a fall would be the most unpleasant. All along the ravine of the Tizu the path runs from time to time along the face of the cliff about 300 feet above the river, and whenever it gets to an unpleasant place like that, it gets very narrow, and in places cannot be more than 3 feet. Riding a 15 hand pony as I was it made my head go all hot. A stumble would have finished the day's march. Apparently the villages on this new road are only getting Rs 10/- a mile, so one cannot expect much. The Chaukidar of Melomi Inspection Bungalow and still more the Muharrir need stirring up. The stable had no machan for the sais and the latrine was neglected. The approach road to the bungalow is very bad and I should like to know whether it would not be possible to shorten it. Some of the bridges, particularly in the valley below Melomi are very doubtful, but being covered with earth it is impossible to guess whether the pony's hoof is going through or not until it does go. Generally, the path is not broad enough for pack ponies when loaded. On all these points I want a report from the Overseer, please. Kotesimi suggested that it was time to pay more than Rs 10/- per mile for this road, and I agree. They also complained that Niano promised them Hazara for some coolies who cleared a slip in the harvesting season, but that they have not yet got it. |

My unfortunate sais overshot the Melomi turn and went on to Primi and then came back - about 36 miles he must have marched this day, not less, and much of it in heavy rain. |
