Problems defining areas of responsibility of the Public Works Department - maps and boundary pillar sites |

To Piphima. On the way I repeated my warning to the Gaonbura of Kukhidolan. |

Before leaving I went to look at the sites for which the Public Works Department want maps countersigned with a view to erecting boundary pillars. Several of these maps have needed alteration and it is all so much useless labour. Here the Public Works Department had included in their map of the thana a lot of buildings which are not maintained by them at all but by the police department. The position is anomalous, as the thana and a cook shed are kept up by the Public works Department and the other buildings (stable quarters etc.) by the Police Department. I suggest that it would simplify matters to transfer the whole lot to the Police Department when the boundary pillars marking the sacrosanct plots of the Public Works will not be necessary, and as there need be then no fear of treading on holy ground, the repairs can all be done by the same contractor, or the same departmental labour. |

At Piphima I disposed of two civil cases and renewed some gun licenses. |
