Debate on price of rice and rate of revenue concerning Cheswejumi |
text: |
Double marched to Sakhabama, 23 miles, where I learned that Delahing had died the night before shortly after passing Cheswejumi without recovering consciousness. Cheswejumi as usual asked for an increase in the rate paid by travellers for rice. They nearly always do yet are one of the richer villages and have more surplus than most. I think the reason is that they bring it in to sell in Kohima, where of course, they get more in the open market than they do on indents at the Government rate and it annoys them to lose a couple of pice on a seer or two sold to travellers. I told them that their taxation was very light and that I would consider raising the price of rice if they were prepared to pay revenue at Rs.5/- instead of Rs.3/-. |
