I dealt with a dak in the morning and in the afternoon went to the fort where I had arranged to hear cases. When I got there I found the Jemadar had taken the sepoys concerned to Borjan as the Assistant Sub Inspector had told him I would hear them there - a pure invention which the Jemadar had not had the intelligence to verify by sending to the Inspection Bungalow (500 yards away) though the Naga compounder, knowing me better than he did, advised him to do so. However, I then started off for Borjan 3 miles off in the hottest part of the day. When I had got almost there I heard that the Jemadar, witnesses etc. and the Assistant Sub Inspector had all started back for the fort by the Naga path. I sweated back up some 2000 ft. and found that they had reached there and started back again for Borjan. This time I waited for them and we started cases about 5.0pm instead of 2.30. I came to the conclusion that the Assistant Sub Inspector was more fool than knave, but still fancy he jumped to the conclusion I should hear cases at Borjan because that would be the pleasantest for him. The trouble is he talks English but doesn't understand it. In the evening I went down to Borjan. |
