Unhealthy inhabitants of Longtang; problems obtaining coolies |

20/11/1926 To Santok, about 9 miles but most of it an exceptionally steep ascent. The village is small, as are all Chang villages except Tuensang itself. They were quite friendly. |

21/11/1926 To Yali via Longtang, about 18 miles, but a bad path down into a valley up a steep slope down again to the Pamship river and up again. We had arranged to change coolies at Longtang, a rather wretched little Chang village where everyone has goitre, and of course the reliefs were 20 coolies short. Santok refused to go on at all, but Younyu and Litim, who were also carrying agreed to send on a few men each. Let Santok go home without any pay at all and paid Younyu and Litim double - the ones that came on that is. |
