Christians-Ancients disputes at Nungtseng; successful lac cultivation |

To Sanis. Yimza and Yimbarasa want the arrangements for carrying changed and wish to carry from Farkating or Mirapani, as the case may be, to Bhandari instead of from Bhandari to Sanis. It will mean an order in the reverse on some Mokokchung villages. Momphiyo and Yimza apply for guns, likewise Lotzu. Spent the afternoon trying cases from Nungtseng, a little village of about sixty (60) houses. All the cases of Christian were ancient. They have the communal virus very badly. The village is rent with discord and house is divided against house and parents against children; no peace indeed, but a sword. |

I found here slates, books, black-board, chair and table belonging to a defunct primary school. They can be used elsewhere. |

I visited the lac gardens here in the evening. Sanis is a rich village owing to its cattle trade with the plains, though that has now fallen off, and it is investing its money in lac. One man has spent Rs.100/- in clearing and planting about five puras of land, and practically every one in the village has got lac plantations of some sort. Chansemo who is in charge of lac in the Sub-division obviously knows his business. He is experimenting with various forest trees and has found many which are suitable and which he says will be better than the usual ones because they will last so much longer. They will obviously be much more trouble to collect the lac from, but that may not worry the Naga much, as he climbs like a cat. |
