13th. To Baimho - Managed to avoid one village by taking a short cut, but had to do a sort of pub crawl through Sheyepu and Sotoemi. The Tizu valley is much changed since I last saw it and almost all the flat land is taken up with panikhets. There is much more wood about than there used to be, and the practice of leaving the alders in the crop and even of putting fresh ones when the land is under cultivation seems catching on at last. The trees by the road side have grown up and as they are mostly alder their seed is helping the good work. Sub-Divisional Officer is probably pollarding them too high. Eight or at most ten feet above ground is generally the best height; then when they are cut again they can be cut a foot or so above the old place. If cut at 16 ft. to start with the tree is likely to get top heavy and subsequent pollardings to become inconveniently high. Baimho Inspection Bungalow needs more earth oiling on the outside to the east. The covering up of the woodwork in the west room is anything but an improvement and I recommend pulling off the plaster again. At present the whitewash comes off on anything that touches it and the interior of the room is quite spoiled in appearance. |
