A fuss is going on in the village because one or two Christian girls have refused to shave their heads till marriage according to the immemorial custom of the village. They like to grow their hair to put the come-hither on the boys, but the ancients say it is tabu, and of course the Christians cannot pretend that it is a matter of conscience for them to grow their hair, so I have ordered them that they must obey the village custom or live outside the village. It is a clean and seemly custom, and St.Paul would certainly have been on my side. |
