I arrived yesterday at Wakching after my tour of the province. I was on the go the whole time but succeeded in getting a lot done that would have been very difficult to do on paper. I have just received a sweep ticket - this time on the race in 1935! I am enclosing it with this letter. I have just received a most extraordinary stone from Nian. Thus: SKETCH |

It was found in the river. It is a very hard black stone obviously carved and A is a very clever representation of a J.T. Nobody here has any idea of what it represents. The base is absolutely flat and this shape: SKETCH |

If you will be in Shillong when I come up for the pujahs I can bring it up or I can send it now by post if you like. It is about 9" long by about 6" high. I have got one or two beautiful things this time. A monkey's skull with two little mirrors let in for the eyes! A walking stick with four men facing outwards near the top. All carved out of the same piece of wood. Quite the cleverest thing in this line I have yet seen. It has come from Wanching. SKETCH I wish we could get this Konyak carving on the market. I sincerely hope that you are fit again now and have recovered from the op. if they have yet undertaken it. |

I should like a letter of intro to Mr Balfour if you could let me have it and I shall see him in Oxford together with my box of trophies. |
