Ghost-houses; march to Phekrokejima |

Left Melomi at 8.40 a.m. by the Naga path leading direct down to the Tuzu R. Very steep descent; reached the river in an hour. On the way down, not far from Melomi, were some small ghost-houses with offerings to the dead, evidently old ones falling into decay. A short way through a small panikhet led to the track which runs along the left bank of the Tuzu, mounts high above it and then descends to the river at the cane suspension bridge. Huluks (Hylobales niger) were heard near the river. We lunched on the left bank & then crossed the cane bridge, having just passed a very large coolie convoy of rations going to Primi fort - about 60 or more carriers - We found the horses waiting on the other bank & rode up to Phekrokejema, arriving at about 2.30 p.m. [About 18 miles by the Naga path route from Melomi]. Tibbu, Hutton's Irish terrier, was lost on the way up, & may have been caught by a leopard. Both leopards and bears are numerous around here. I was very sorry, as Tibbu & I were great friends. Nikrihu went down with malaria for the fourth time since leaving Kohima. Fine all day. Mosquitoes very troublesome in the late afternoon. Extensive panikhets around Phekrokejema. |
