Visit to Yesami: houses, sacrifices, graves |
text: |
We left Baimho in the morning. Hutton walked and Mills & I rode part & walked the rest of the way to Aichi-Sagami (c. 11 miles). The track was down hill to a stream which we crossed by a bridge of poles covered with cane-matting, very springy. We rode up to Yesami village (Sema) & Mills & I were invited to visit the village. We went through it & were treated to madhu. A small village with nothing remarkable. We rode on again to Sagami having been met by the gaonbura & the village buffoon - a man of wit & considerable acting power. In the afternoon Mills & I went over the various separate sections of the village, which straggles a long way, & drank madhu in 3 or 4 houses. The houses are widely-spaced & here & there almost form streets. They vary in type. Most have the roof projecting far over the front, forming a verandah which is sometimes fenced round with a three-post fence. Some have both front & back apsoidal, others only the back apsoidal. Walls mainly of bamboo lattice & matwork of various kinds; thatched roofs. Two rooms, the front one smaller than the back room, a lattice partition between them. Poor carvings on the houses, or none.
