Visit to the old town of Akbar; Christmas dinner in Agra |

Up at 6 a.m. The American, Rogers, and I caught the 7 a.m. train at the Fort Station for Fatehpur Sikri, taking his bearer with a lunch basket with us. We went all over the old town of Akbar in a fairly leisurely way, spending the whole day there, with intervals for lunch & tea at the Dak Bungalow, Fine, warm day and a wonderfully interesting place. This surrounded by a huge sandstone wall enclosing a very large area. Some of the buildings are in excellent state, others in ruins. Some of the carvings are exquisite. Most of the buildings are of red sandstone, but the tomb of the Saint (Shaikh Salim Chishti) is of pure-white marble beautifully carved, with a canopy over the cenotaph inlaid all over with mother-o-pearl in lovely designs. We sat for a good while on the top of the Elephant Tower. |

We took the 6.36 p.m. train (which did not start till after 7) back to Agra & arrived at the hotel at 8.45 p.m. Dressed & went into dinner at 9.15. Christmas dinner & decorations. The manager of the hotel entertained us with some really first-class sleight-of-hand tricks, mostly with cards, very cleverly executed. |
