text: The Lagoons to the west of the Canal were alive with birds. Duck, Sandpipers, Dunlins, Stints, Stilt-plovers, in myriads. Numerous herons & flamingoes in large flocks but rather far off. One pelican seen. The Ducks were hard to identify as the shimmering light blurred them; but Shovellers were numerous & conspicuous & I think that Gadwall & Garganey both were there. Very few geese to be seen. Of land-birds I saw Kites, Peregrines, Kingfishers (both Ceryle and ispida), & ? a Marsh Harrier.
text: Arrived at Port Said at 9 a.m. I watched some very clever native jugglers on board & then went ashore for a short while. Coaling took a long time & we did not sail till 4.45 pm. H.M.S. "Ajax" left for Constantinople, passing quite close to us & looking fine, with 10 twelve-inch guns in pairs.
