Contrast between Christianised and unconverted khels at Bara Arkap |
text: |
Halted. Another long day. Out from eight to four. Not knowing we had to go so far we took no lunch with us, and lived on rice beer. We went down to Bara Arkap, on to Phaipi and back up a long, long spur to Duijung and so home. Bara Arkap and Phaipi are Kolang Kuki villages right at the base of the hills and not far from the Silchar border. The former is divided into two khels. In the first we came to the inhabitants, being converts of the Welsh Mission, wear shirts and soft felt hats from White-away (sic) Laidlaw or some similar store. In the second khel, by way of contrast, we found a ceremonial feast in full swing and a small monolith being set up. |
