TOUR NOTE ON TIRAP FRONTIER TRACT, DECEMBER 19TH TO 22ND 1944. |

1. 'The Ledo Road.' - I went up the road as far as the crest of the Patkoi. At about mile 19 it crosses the proposed boundary between Provincial and Tribal Territory and Naga 'Jhums' and villages soon became visible. If it can be kept permanently open as a motor road as far as Hell Gate (about mile 30) it will be invaluable as a means of access to our tribal area. Beyond that the difficulties of the terrain would probably make the cost of anything better than a bridle path or possibly a jeep track prohibitive, for it taps no trade en route and probably is of only strategic value as far as Burma is concerned. |
