Almost my first public duty was to hold a great ritual dance in honour of the return of the Naga Labour Corps from France. All the tribes were represented. The dancing dress is gorgeous with feathers in the Angami tribe with a huge erection on the head in which many wear long feathers of the hornbill, each feather in the old days a sign of a head taken in war. Every man carried a spear. The Angamis marched onto the parade ground with deep sounding rythmic cries of "How. How". The smaller statured Semas danced in a quick and lively way. I gave out quantities of rupees provided by Government and a number of buffaloes were presented to them and killed and eaten that night. |
