22nd. - To Rishetsu, a Sangtam village 6800 feet, about 10 miles, where we camped on an old village site on the ridge after a severe climb. Water scanty and distant. On the way we passed through Honronre, (4,200 feet) where they gave us a pig. I told them to cut this up and distribute it to the assembled headmen, a large and heterogeneous company. A man of Phesami took hold of the pig's head for Hovokhu, his chief, to cut off and insisted on Hovokhu borrowing his dao as being a better one than Hovokhu's. As the blow descended the blade flew out of the haft and chopped off its owner's three bigger toes of one foot, absolutely clean. Our doctor sewed them on again. |

In our camp were the posts of one house of the village that had stood there - three enormous trees cut flat and with a mortice at the top for the roof-tree.
