Halted. Jeff went out fishing early up the Irang. We held a super washday and disposed of enormous arrears, including shorts covered with Chota Hatea mud. Heard loud wallowing just after we had hung things up to dry; suspected elephants. Went back to bank (in pyjamas) to see. Saw elephant swimming, lathi-wallah up and baby swimming alongside and round. Elephant landed near port. Man called he would come to camp. Ran up to camp, elephant wallowing after in slow time. Man parked elephant in mid-camp, among the washing; baby still wobbly on legs and absolute comic turn. |

After tiffin Celia and I had short siesta and took raft out. Rather public, but managed to pole and paddle along (55) my route of yesterday, only rather less successfully. I fell overboard heavily into 2 feet of water, and bent a spring in the S. transept. Bruise coming up nicely by evening. Failed to make turning to island first time, had to try again. Steering very odd with 2 up. My pole awful thing about 20 feet long, and quite unmanageable. Got round island, nearly didn't get into Irang, overshot mooring-ground, and moored on mudbank where I sat down day before. Impress of my tail end still visible. Probably there till next rains. Went back to bathing place, moored and I swam. Paddled back, failed to make port, ran into backwater by bank and had job getting out, and eventually made poor landing with aid of all available Kukis. On returning to camp found men from last camp (Phaibok) asking for more quinine and medicine for headman, who had fever and bad headache. Issued quinine and 2 Veganin tablets. |

Man came up and began to peel off his shirt. All held our breaths and braced ourselves for awful revelation, but it (56) proved to be only skin-trouble, running in curves across back an under arm, over upper ribs. Painted with iodine and issued boric ointment for future use. Nothing else to do. |
