text: Marched fairly early again - 8.10 a.m. Road went down, in thick mist and dense jungle, all ghostly and full of dew and drips, to river and collapsed bridge, where Jeff caught us up and Peter was forcibly bathed off the temporary bridge. Hill beyond, very steep, many zigzags; still thick mist; heard coolies' voices echoing oddly and at last caught them up and found Hamja taken sick with fever and huddled over a small fire. Jeff gave him tea, tried to get him to take whisky; he wouldn't. Marched on. Had oranges on spur, photographed coolies passing
text: Camp fine big basha on saddle, near road. Road very zig-zag, and hills steep and sheer everywhere; valleys narrow, like ravines, and hills all jammed together, ribbed and ridged and full of peaks and gullies. Quite an interesting crowd in camp, several girls with pipes, and one or two fine old men. Dusk when we got in, so only two photos; a glorious sunset, red behind blue hills and black trees. Sat round the fire with overseer's coolies, including the famous Cornelius, with a fine necklace and the physique of a gladiator - or (88) Hollywood's idea of it.
