text: (48) April 5th. Paoyi. 11.m. Tot. 164.
text: Wakened by rain about 4a.m. Called at 5.30, breakfast 6.30; left 7.30. Shower as we left, but cleared up later. Road much easier than last time! Told Luikai about last time. He said "Oh, you never told us; if you had I'd have gone to the bhasti and said 'The memsahib's ill, send men.' and we'd have carried you, like this". Also asked me why I had come to give medicines. I told him it was because there was no one else to come, and many Nagas were ill with no one to help. To which: "Bahut rupaye gaye; kiswaste aye? - Capra, modhu England men lene sakta; idhar bahut rupaye gaye; ap kiswaste aye?" I'm not quite sure if he thinks me a saint or loopy - certainly the latter.
text: Reached Paowi, unwelcomed & unexpected, about 1p.m. Blowing great guns. Chinaorang has gone to Nungbi. Luikai asked me for a chicken for his baby. I told him he could have two. He looked down, as usual; I wonder if these things mean as much to him as he looks as if they do? I should love to know what really does go on inside his head. He is an odd little savage. (49) He vanished before we reached the bridge, and reappeared with a huge orchid with yellow flowers. Gave his a whole packet of cigarettes, as it seemed worth it. Short dispensary in p.m. Compounder strolling about, very casual and off-hand. One pneumonia case; Jangsang gave injection of S.U.P.
text: In p.m., song-and-dance party in Jangsang's hut.
text: Found my cine-camera case sling had been left in Chingjaroi. Despatched (or Luikai did) man with note to Khullakpa. Tangkhul note composed by Luikai.
