Oh, gosh, the fun we have! Went to Kuki Xtian village 3 miles off. Dispensed merrily, till man produced small child covered with rash. Suddenly realised as I examined it, that it was measles. Said they should keep it in house, or all the children would get it. Cheerful answer: "Oh, they've all had it or got it!" and a much measled girl of 16 was pointed out, about 6 feet behind me! Then they had a tamasha in the lower village, and I dispensed merrily in the middle, with zu-pots to left, dancers in front and the dispensary - self, Luikai, Xtian Naga, Kuki, and the Kachai Khullakpa - full blast in the middle. Gosh, I am angry about those measles. I shall be angrier still if I get it, and I shall be vastly surprised if I don't. Gargled wildly on return, & set staff gargling. Abung set the boys washing, so Lysoled their clothes & mine - no doubt a hygenic measure. Khullakpa and Co. asked for gargle. Issued permanganate in bottle, with dry supply in tin for future use. Wrestling in p.m. (59) Last match Luikai vs. Kachai. Kachai, a bigger man, just won, but it was a ding- dong struggle and the best I have seen yet. |

Measles village told us the other Kuki village has measles too. My 3 Kuki coolies have been living up there, so I gave them double wages as compensation and turned them off. They came back and argued there were now no cases in Kachai Kuki, and they wanted to come on. They are good coolies, but if they are contacts I don't want to lug them round the country. Have rashly resolved to go to the village to-morrow to hand out medicine. |
