text: (Nov. 17th 1939. City of Benares. At sea.)
text: On April 18th we marched across country to Tuinem. The path was very faint & hard to find, and we lost it several times, or were at fault. The compounder, who started after us, got lost altogether. It was a very steep hot march, steep, all up and down. At last we came out through fields to the river, where a man from a working party came down to direct us, wearing nothing but a Tangkhul ring and a little mud on his tummy. (70) Luikai was blushing so hotly I could feel it, and Abung guffawed loudly!
text: We all reached Tuinem tired and hot. I wanted to lie down, so put up the bed myself. Luikai came in in the middle and looked very reproachful. The compounder turned up very late and tried to underpay his coolie, the original having caved in at Phadang. Coolie appealed to me in fifty different sharps and flats. I made the compounder pay.
