text: (1) Haflong to Mahur By Rail
text: March 5th. 1940
text: Left Haflong in deluge about 11 a.m., & reached bazaar, where bought umbrellas for Tangkhuls, who had run on ahead to the shop; on, in thinning rain, along awful muddy half-made motor-road; clayey, yellow mud, full of pools & most wet to walk in. Caught train at Lower Haflong. In "restaurant", while having a beer - or rather in the exit afterwards - Infant Samuel (Shangshum) managed to abscond with someone else's umbrella as well as our 3! Took the two Tangkhuls & Masang (with Booth's gun, the dog & the spear) into the carriage with me - Ladies Only, 1st Class!
text: Descended, with Nagas (the two Tangkhuls slept most of the way, Masang sat & blushed and looked at me sideways) at Mahur. Bungalow built rather on lines of but-and-ben, but all doorways about 4 feet high; cold, with rain; (2) fire smoked like blazes. Wakhamra an infernal nuisance, wanting to be playing with Bess. Old boy came with tame monkey, but it was scared of the dogs. Scare that kitchen thapu had been lost, but it eventually arrived, or rather was found somewhere about the sheds.
