Rain about again; we marched through more dense forest by a wiggly wet Naga path. Were over-taken by the "badmash" from Longkai, & 3 boys. Destination & purpose of journey not stated. Was met outside village by deputation of elders, etc. with liquor. Village straggling steeply down spur. Was met by elder after elder, who fell at my feet and embraced them and called me "Mother". ("Mai" or "Apui", according to linguistic attainments. NB. "Herapui" apparently means "goddess". Gumtuing now (15/6/40) had taken to calling me "Rani",; Baladan weighed in with "Rani- Mai", and practically everyone else except the sophisticated "Apui". |

Further Note: "Apui" (used in personal address) does mean mother. Herapui (used in compliment when speaking of one to a third person) does mean "goddess". Usual form of address when speaking to another Naga is "Shebpui" - 'female Sahib". ) |

Eventually attained perao, which was next to local wash-hole and full of flies and lowing mithan. H. of P. straight opposite cookhouse and defended by barrage of mithan and dung. Did not patronise same! Mithan bellowing round the place all night. Masang loped off home after dark, with a torch of reeds. |
