Angami raids against the Zemi |

After one of the Angami raids the angry Zemis reformed and pursued them. The Angamis knew it, and hurried home without resting day or night. Near their own village they judged themselves safe and lay down to sleep. Here the Zemis caught them up. Scouts went to look at the camp and found that they were indeed Angamis, and the avengers stole into the camp and butchered the lot. (N.I.) |

On another occasion the Zemis were driven from their village, but lay up by the road to wait for the returning Angamis. However, the Angamis were camped in the jungle and there took the omens, or "made puja" and found out that there was an ambush. Day after day the Zemis waited, day after day the raiders took the omens and still found the road closed, till the Zemis gave it up and went home, saying that the Angamis must have gone by another road. Then the Angamis took the omens for the last time and found the road clear, and so went home. (N.I.) |
