text: Petty theft is not, and was not, punished. Major thefts are not common and were settled by restitution of the stolen goods; may still be.
text: Sometimes the whole village was called together in the case of a major theft, for identification of the thief. He was to be recognised by his demeanour. This was done although the thief was not known, with the idea of inflicting shame. It was "great shame" for his relatives and clan.
text: A real bad thief might be expelled from the village (cf. case of boy who stole buffalo & sold it).
