Notes on Nenglo Village (Zemi Naga), North Cachar Hills. |

1. This is a village of 40 odd houses and one of the few in which the Neomi clan predominates. It is of common origin with the Hangrum group. It lies high (4,8OO ft.) and is always poor, the steep adjacent slopes having little jhum-land, but the villagers prefer the site as being healthy. |

2. The village formerly owned a tract of land on the far side of the Jiri, immediately opposite Haijaichak village. When the Manipur State boundary was demarcated they understood they were cut off from it and ceased to cultivate it 'for fear of the Sahibs'. Subsequently a Kuki community found it vacant and occupied it, forming the present Maovom (Phoklong Kuki). |

3. Nenglo have a relatively small land-area, as they are wedged between the Haijaichak-Laisong-Kepelo block on the north and Hangrum on the south. Their jhum-land is almost all on the long western slope of the Jiri valley; they have no real jhum-land on the Jenam side, as the slopes there are exceptionally steep, but owing to the shortage jhums are cut here, on slopes wholly unsuited to them. |

4. Nenglo (correctly Ngimloa) have kinsfolk in Tagworam (Phoklong Khunao) who own land on the east bank of the Jiri valley, opposite Nenglo. Nenglo made a private arrangement with them to jhum the land on payment of the usual rent in cash, grain or labour, but Tagworam stipulated that Nenglo should get official sanction first. Nenglo approached S.D.O. Haflong, who agreed to forward the request to the Manipur authorities. This was a year or so ago. As far as I know, no answer was ever received, and while Nenglo were waiting for it Imupuloa (Phoklong Khulen) stepped in and cultivated the land in question, so Nenglo have made no further move in the matter. |
