village genna concerning tiger kill |
text: |
If a tiger has taken a mithan or other animal, the owner may ask the tingkhupeo to proclaim a genna. The owner of the animal sits fasting till everyone else in the village has eaten. All work except dhan pounding is strictly forbidden, but the village is not closed. Nothing may be bought from or sold to strangers that day. Anyone breaking the genna is liable to be taken by a tiger. When a party goes out to cut up the carcase and carry in the meat, none of them may go to the jungle again that day, or leave the environs of the village, or the tiger will catch them in revenge for their having taken its kill. |
