No field-work is done, but the village is not closed to strangers. In the morning the men go and clear the paths leading to the jhums, the girls of the dekichang carrying zu for them. This zu comes sometimes from the morung's supply and sometimes the girls themselves provide some. The path is not cleared very far, usually only a few hundred yards, and when that is done the older men go home and the bucks and girls go off for an outing, generally to the river, where they bathe and fish. Conversation and behaviour on these occasions are not quite proper, the young people talking and joking only with their own relatives and kinsmen, and not with those with whom they could enter into a sexual relationship. |
