The men of each Dekachang, bucks, boys, men and elders, gather and work for any wealthy man who has work he wants done. When the work is finished they gather outside his house and ho-ho, and sometimes sing and march in a sort of serpentine procession. For this he must pay them something above the stipulated sum, because of the honour they are doing him. (The lower Dekachang of Laisong carried firewood for me; it cost Rs 4/-, of which the chowkidar paid half, and 8 annas for the ho-hoing and the song.) The money is given to the old women who attend births and do various ceremonies. |
