In the morning the old men go to the small hazoa found outside every village and take with them eleven or twelve hens (one for every spirit whose name is known) two eggs, and zao kasang. They offer the fowls to the spirits individually, naming them, and ask that the village may be healthy and free from illness. A big cock is offered to Tsiuperai. Other principal spirits are Katsingpeo (Mahadeo Hill), Munsineu (Bhuban Hills), Kisa (in the Maguilong direction), and Songdan (above Impoi and Leikul). The spirits are also asked to watch over and protect the villagers when travelling. leaf cups are put in a line along the hazoa, and filled with zao kasang, one cup for each spirit; leaves are placed opposite each cup, and beginning with the big cock offered to Tsuiperai, the fowls' throats are cut and the blood allowed to fall on the leaves. |
