The mother works as usual after the birth, except that she may not go to the fields until after the child has been taken out for the first time. Husband and wife must sleep on separate beds and may not have connection till the next new moon, but if bleeding persists the man may not lie with his wife till it has stopped, however late that may be. Until the new moon the house is closed to strangers, and the mother must cook and eat separately, eating with her rice only fowls, bamboo shoots, greens, onions and salt. Any food which she leaves over must be thrown away and not eaten by anyone else. |
