divorce of pregnant women |
text: |
If a pregnant woman is divorced, she must remain strictly chaste until the child is born; after that, provided the divorce case has been heard and settled, she is free of her former marriage and can contract a new one. The new-born child must be taken at once and shown to the father's family, even if they live in a different village, to prove that it has not been made away with, as might happen if the quarrel were a bitter one. The father may then return the child to the mother to suckle it, if she agrees, or keep it and try to bring it up with or without a foster- mother. |
