Behind this front room is the main room (ki-lung: "within the house"), earth-floored like the front room, and 15 feet long. There are no windows and it is almost pitch-dark. Behind this main room is a third room or walled-in porch (ki-tsai-nkwoa-ki: "the room behind the house") which is used either for storage or is occupied by members of the household other than the householder, his wife and his young children, for example, by an aged parent, or by a widowed daughter or sister who has returned to her father's or brother's house to await remarriage. It may also be occupied by a recently-married son and his wife who have not yet built a house of their own. In the same way, a daughter lives in the back room of her father's house for the first year of her marriage and is visited there by her husband. |
