The front wall of the hangseoki is made of the usual split and interlaced bamboo. The doorway is beside the front central pillar and near each extremity of the front wall is a long window. Over the lintel of the doorway and sometimes over the windows as well are horizontal strips of white wood shaped like weaving-swords, painted with black stripes and the figures of men and animals drawn in charcoal and red earth. The front wall ends 15 feet from the ground and leaves a triangular space 12 feet deep below the roof-tree, a space through which smoke emerges and light enters the hall. |
