If the young man prospers and through industry and good fortune becomes possessed of a sufficient surplus of rice over and above his household's needs for the year, he may begin the series of Feasts of Merit by which the individual villager acquires prestige and status. The first feast, Kreodung, involves the killing of a pig and a small ceremonial feast to kinsmen and friends. It confers little prestige, the outlay is relatively small, and it merely initiates the series. It may be carried out on the resources of the household without the need to bring in supplies from elsewhere. |
