When these limitations are considered in relation to the already difficult Central Nzemi terrain, it is clear that the land suitable for shifting cultivation will there be considerably restricted in extent. It is in fact confined to scattered pockets. But to support itself indefinitely by the type of cultivation the Central Nzemi favour, in which successive blocks must regenerate for 15 years or longer between periods of cropping, a village needs a very large extent of land even under favourable conditions.
