river trip along the Brahmaputra |

Stayed some 4 hours at Kallyganj on the Rt. Bank of the Brahmaputra Rr. Discovered when out after small birds that a small jheel contained plenty of snipe and I got 5 out of 8 shots to begin with, then went back with Burt to the steamer. Got my new breech loader and we sallied out again returning with 9 couple snipe, losing one couple. I also shot a bronze winged jacana, metapidius indicus, & at same time Ardola lencoptera which was in the reeds close to it at the time. There was one jack snipe out of the lot (G. gallinula Lin.) The jhat was in capital order with not too much water and had we worked it the whole time we'd have got another five or six couple - do not like my new gun so well as the old. Saw Garo Hills in early morning. Pretty view of same as we steamed up from Kallyganj. |
