Brookes & Hesketh seedy. Fog as bad as the previous day & did not get away until 11 o/c. Usual scenery in the aftern., the high flat ranges of the Khasi Hills distinct & Kollong rock shewing up very plain & I cd trace some of the longer valleys along the range & other hill tops. Wrote letters and made a drawing of one of the coolies. Interesting sections shewing the regularity of deposition of alluvium on horizontal & sloping surfaces or in other words conforming to the original form of surface as seen as we go up. The clay & sand settles on the sandbanks after certain intervals & these sandbanks being always higher in some parts than in others. The beds of clay are found dipping over at considerable angle into depressions in the sandbanks the lines of older drainage. Thekyah partridge were numerous on the chur & were calling up to 10 last night. |
