On the 18th we started from Golaghat on elephants. Got one from Mr Sullivan of the EIC, they very kindly gave us bkfast. The other we got from a native zemindar of the name Moilunghi. At abt three and a half miles the cultivated country ends. It is flat with marshy beds of the old river near the last village soon after the forest is entered & extends all the way to the 1st halting place where the Namba river from the west joins the Dunsiri. It is a considerable stream and takes the drainage of a large lump of the Mikir Hills. At this place and close to where we pitched the tents are some hot springs with temp're of 110 degrees. They rise in two spots at a bend of the river. The amount of water that issues from them is considerable & bubbles up with considerable energy from several orifices. The bottom is of hardish white sand & the water has an unpleasant smell. Met here Capt. Butler who had ridden from his camp one march farther up the valley. He must have had a very dark unpleasant ride back for he did not leave until nearly dusk. Shot a bat over the hot spring. |
