Started early next morning entering forest immediately & were in it all day skirting the LB of the Dunsiri. Got that day as far as Huriajan a large bungalow on piles within a stockade on the bank of the river. Banks abt 20ft high, all sandy clay. This place to Deemapur being a very long march I determined to do it in two. March through the same dense forest raised abt the same height above the river Dunsiri. Foggy in morning. Passed the Huriajan, a small stream flowing in a deep muddy channel with but little water & that had cut itself a deep channel in the soft mud. Leeches here now very numerous. Shot a few birds & got a few insects on the march. Began a route survey this day, Ogle pacing I taking the bearings. Encamped on bank of the Dunsiri, here a slow shallow stram full of snags and trees with a breadth of abt 120 yds. Making the Border survey, shooting birds whenever they shewed & collecting insects - we got into Deemapur abt 4 o/c, a place with a stockade & a few native huts. On the RB ground rather more up & down. After dark moths very numerous & I made a good bag & killed the beetles &c that had been caught during the day & sorted out all into their proper boxes. Temp're now very pleasant, not at all cold at night, no fog. Dunsiri still a quiet stream with high banks. |
