The Nagas & Kookis began firing the remaining houses as soon as they went out into the place, & pig killing & fowl spearing was going on all sides. About 10 o/c 4 Nagas from Yemi came into the place in a great state of funk & hoped that we were not going to cut up their village. Two of these men were caught about 1.15 setting fire to the remaining houses in the place & were immediately quodded but were released in evening & sent back to their village. It came on to rain hard abt 2 & 3 o/c & continued to do so until 9 or 10 at night. Went out in evening to further end of village, some of the inhabitants had been in, for we found a fresh lighted fire in one house & other signs of occupation. Butler & Thompson going on down the road from SE entrance came suddenly on five Nagas sitting by a fire who vanished, one so quickly that he forgot his spear which Butler ran up & secured. The night passed off quietly, some Nagas were seen going off towards the road we had come in by & Butler got up & went out to see what they were about, but of course with a pitch dark night no more was seen of them. To let the sentries see the ground in their vicinity another house was fired. After the excitements of the last 24 hours I slept till reveille after going to bed again at 3 like a top. |
