On the 17th January there was a sort of outbreak in the village of Kohima, which, with the exception of the Chitonoma Khel, had hitherto behaved tolerably well. At first coolies were refused. Intimidation being resorted to, four Khels submitted: but the remainder took the jungle. The village was occupied, and that part of it belonging to the recusant Khels sacked by the troops, who laid willing hands on the livestock of the Nagas. A man of the 34th Native Infantry was, however, speared in the adjacent jungle, and one of the 42nd Assam Light Infantry wounded. Two Nagas are reported to have been killed, and four were taken prisoners. On some of the latter were found proofs that they taken part in the late outbreak. One was wearing a sepoy's pouch. In the evening the troops returned to their quarters. |
