The coolies were enlisted very slowly. Dhangurs and Sonthalis were not procurable, even by tea planters. Twenty Bhutias were enlisted, and Major Chambers reports on the 3rd February that renewed efforts were being made to obtain Darjiling men, but the pay offered (Rs.8) was not sufficient. The bulk of the coolies seem to have been men from Allahabad, Dinapur (sic), and other towns in the plains. The pony syces were common coolies who received some little training in Calcutta from Major Chambers before being shipped to Golaghat. |
